Keeping Business Local

Posted February 25th, 2010 | No Comments

Authorized Access!! A local business, employing local people, serving local people for over 20 years…

Information taken from the ‘Federation Of Small Businesses’ Website suggests that the House Of Commons All-Party Small Shops Group estimates that there will be no independent retailers by 2015!

Apparently for the past three years small independent shops have been closing at a rate of 5000 per year, in the UK. This has risen alarmingly in 2009, when 25,000 small shops, which represents 10% of the total, closed in the first nine months of the year and there are another 50,000 shops teetering on the brink of extinction.

Is it the recession that’s responsible for this phenomenon, or is there a more sinister explanation?  Is it inevitable in modern times that price will be the prime consideration when making a buying decision?

Small independent local businesses will never be able to compete on price with large national companies who take advantage of economies of scale or internet based micro businesses whose overheads are so much lower than those borne on the high street.

Service is the key to retaining customers and while small local businesses ignore that fact they give more power to the anonymous ‘big boys’ to drive nails into their coffins. Promise to look after your customer, whatever it takes and you stand a chance of postponing what too many people seem to believe to be the inevitable.

We at Authorized Access know that we do our very best for our customers, we don’t always get it right but we always aim to put it right if things don’t initially go to plan. Our staff are all highly trained, with a recognised qualification in Customer Service, as well as being qualified in their field of expertise.

Security In Schools With uPVC Doors

Posted January 28th, 2010 | No Comments

uPVC doors continue to present a challenge for security conscious people since the secure closing of the door depends on the last person through locking the door after themselves.

open-upvc-door1

In the home this can present a problem where children are constantly using doors and leaving them unlocked. In public buildings or schools this issue can have far greater consequence since the duty of care for children and employees lies with the authority, which must ensure that every effort is taken to safeguard the people under its care. Safeguarding children is a current hot topic during OFSTED inspections of schools and can lead to severe penalties being placed on schools who have failed to take adequate precautions.

Traditionally in schools where uPVC doors were fitted as external doors, thumb-turn cylinders were also fitted to make it easier to ensure the doors were locked after use, however, human error could easily allow doors to be left unlocked and so insecure during busy times, especially in schools where staff may be under great pressure from excitable children.

We have had great success installing a battery operated; stand alone fob entry system in schools with uPVC doors. The system retro fits to most uPVC doors, requiring only the handles and lock cylinders to be replaced.

The system, called Smartair can be fitted to all external doors within the school and a single fob programmed to open each door individually, thus members of staff can be issued with a single fob that will operate each and every door.

Fob activation of the lock engages the outside handle, allowing access to the door once. As soon as the door closes the outside handle becomes disengaged and access is no longer possible until the fob is reintroduced.

Exit through the door is always possible during the working day as the inside handle is permanently engaged. This satisfies all the requirements of safety and security. If the door is closed, it is certain to be locked from the outside but exit is still possible in an emergency.

Smartair Standalone access control is the ideal solution for schools seeking a solution to the problem of Safeguarding Children in schools with uPVC doors.

No wiring required, which means speedy installation and minimal disruption to school life, even during term time!

Smartair can also be fitted to wooden doors, guaranteeing a comprehensive and effective total school security solution.

For more information and a quotation to secure your school, contact AUTHORIZED ACCESS fitted prices are from £395+VAT per door.

Who Needs A Safe?

Posted January 15th, 2010 | No Comments

Who needs a safe?

Who needs a safe? You may ask.

‘I don’t have anything to put in a safe!’ Is a mantra I often hear when talking to home owners. Are they right? Let’s think about it…

What could I possibly have that needs to be kept in a safe? Well, maybe nothing that NEEDS to be kept in a safe, things only NEED to be kept in a safe if it is a requirement of our insurance policy. However, if you were unfortunate enough to become the victim of a break-in at home and 2008/9 crime figures* suggest that domestic burglaries are up 1% on the previous year, what might it cost you to recover, in monetary and emotional terms?

*Home Office British Crime Survey 2008/9

What do thieves target and what could be the cost to you?

Jewellery, it’s often not the value to replace but the sentimental value that’s priceless. The wedding ring left by your Grandmother, may cost very little to replace through your insurance but how do you cover it’s sentimental value and your emotional loss?

Cash, how do you prove the amount taken and can you be sure your insurance company will pay out? Cash is great for the opportunist thief and they know all your hiding places. The cost may only be measurable in terms of stress, when it’s gone it’s gone!

Passports, are replaceable but at a cost to you, as much as £112 per passport, plus the worry of identity theft.

These items are only some of the things thieves may target and the cost is already mounting, both in real terms and emotional cost.

Unfortunately you can’t guarantee that you won’t be burgled but should the unthinkable happen the use of a good home safe will protect those costly and irreplaceable items, saving you money, stress and much heartache.

New Year Security Tips

Posted December 21st, 2009 | No Comments

Authorized Access will be closed for Christmas from 12.30pm Christmas Eve until Monday 4 January 2010

May we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

New Year Security Tips

With the hustle and bustle of Christmas behind us, what a great feeling, we are finally able to take some time to relax and enjoy those new and exciting presents.  Golf clubs, lap top, games console, gold bracelet, mobile phone, all with no expense spared.

I wonder what the thief is thinking!  His Christmas has come and gone and now he knows for a fact that virtually every home holds rich pickings for him.

Are you simply going to sit back and allow him to take what he wants, thinking he too should have what you have?

There are ways of protecting those things your hard earned money has paid for, either by physically preventing them being taken or acting as a deterrent, thieves want an easy life, are you prepared to give them that?

Unfortunately security is a selfish thing, we can not stop crime but by improving YOUR security the criminal moves ‘down the street’ to the next weakest link!

Here’s how:

Golf clubs - Property marking individual clubs and cable locking to an anchor eye when stored in the garage.

Lap Top - Property marking and using a ‘Lap Saver’ security locking kit when using away from home or office.

Games Console - Property marking and displaying warning signs to deter the thief, cable security kits could be used to attach the console to other less portable objects, i.e. TV Stand.

Gold Bracelet – Small domestic safes cost much less than most people think.

Mobile Phones – Phone marking kits personalise and make phones easily identifiable.

There are practical solutions to all your security needs, including simple advice and tips.

A Christmas Moral!

Posted November 27th, 2009 | No Comments

A little tale to help you enjoy a peaceful Christmas!

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

But who’s at the window and peering through

At presents and treasure wrapped up by you?

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The thief was inside with incredible ease

Eyeing the loot he was going to seize

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

Now the thief filled his bag and with a snigger of glee

“Laptops and jewellery all for me”

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,

No rest for the thief though, he works through the night

Not a thought for the children asleep out of sight.

The moral of the story that I need to bestow

Is secure your home, don’t leave presents on show

Authorized Access, you know you can trust

To fit locks and security, IT IS A MUST!
